National Grid celebrates volunteering week in Coventry and Warwickshire with three community events

Colleagues from across the National Grid Group have come together to celebrate Volunteering Week (2-8 June) in Coventry & Warwickshire.

Three separate events have taken place this week, organised by National Grid Electricity Distribution and Transmission. Each business has its own volunteering programme, with over 17,000 hours of volunteering clocked in across the two businesses in the past year.

Emily Green, Volunteering & Sponsorships Coordinator at National Grid Electricity Distribution, said: “Volunteering Week is a fantastic opportunity for us to give back to the communities where we live and work. “These events form part of our year-round commitment to support local charities and organisations who are doing fantastic work in the area, and building strong links with the communities we serve.”

In Coventry, National Grid colleagues have been working with Rough Close Scout Camp. Set in 43 acres of ancient woodland, Rough Close Scout Camp is a vital space for scout groups, inclusive camps for people with learning disabilities, and the wider community. Volunteers supported essential maintenance, painting, and gardening to help preserve this much-loved site.

Samantha Painter, a National Grid employee who volunteered at Rough Close Scout Camp, said: “It’s been a fantastic opportunity to give something back at a facility that’s been used by my own children in the past, and to meet colleagues from different parts of the business. I’d like to thank Rough Close Scout Camp for having us, and for the amazing work they do in the community.”

In Warwick, at the historic Saltisford Canal, volunteers have contributed to a vital bee conservation initiative. Activities included assembling bee hives and feeders, supporting biodiversity and continuing the legacy of volunteer-led restoration that began in the 1980s.

A group of volunteers also spent the day at The Kenilworth Centre. The Kenilworth Centre serves as a hub for local clubs, youth services, and is home to Radio Abbey. The team assisted with gardening and site maintenance, helping maintain a welcoming space for the community to connect and thrive.

James Dowding, a Business Planning and Performance Manager at National Grid, said: “Community centres like The Kenilworth Centre are such important places and often run by amazing volunteers. I think our small group made a significant impact clearing some of the garden spaces of weeds, and it was great to see some of the users of the centre enjoying the benefits almost immediately!”
